1:1 Net Metering is your new relationship with your utility company. Think about it as your virtual battery! Your panels will always produce more electricity in the spring and summer than in the winter, building up your "virtual storage" for the rest of the year.
Think hotter months, higher sun access, higher production. 1:1 Net metering gives you credits for the energy that you produced and did not end up using in the summer, and allows you to use it in the wintertime (or whenever you need it) when you will not be producing enough electricity compared to what you are consuming.
It's the same concept for day to day scenarios. You'll produce power during the day, and use that same power at night, even though you don't have a physical battery on the property. This is why in most cases, you don't need a battery, and can suffice with 1:1 Net Metering.
